ABOUT KARGIL

Kargil is a district of Ladakh, which is located in Jammu and Kashmir. It lies close to the Line of Control and it faces Gilgit–Baltistan to its west and Kashmir valley to the south. Kargil has been the center of conflict between India and Pakistan in the year 1999 and it was declared as a separate district in the year 1979. It has been considered as the least populous district of Jammu and Kashmir. As it is nestled in the Himalayas, it receives a cool and temperate climate throughout the year. Summers are warm. While, winters are long and cold.

The summer season extends from April to September and the best time to visit Kargil is during the month of May and June. During winter, the roads remain closed making it difficult for the tourist to visit. Kargil District

Kargil is home to many endangered wildlife species like snow leopard, Tibetan wolf (Canis lupus langier), Himalayan brown bear (Ursus arctos isabellinus), Asiatic ibex (Capra ibex), Ladakh urial (Ovis vignei vignei), musk deer (Moschus spp.), pikas, Marmots and hares.Aishwarya Maheshwari of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is quoted as saying, “It is here in Kargil that one of world’s most elusive creatures, the snow leopard, roams wild and free. During my research I have learnt about the tremendous decline in wildlife sightings since the 1999 Kargil war, so much so that even the common resident birds had disappeared.” Besides these endangered form of life various species of birds including the black necked Magpie, House Sparrow, Hoopoe, Rosefinches, Red-billed Coughs, Eastern Chiffchaff, Common Sandpiper and European Goldfinches are a common sight in the summers. India Army rears horses, donkeys and mares for transportation purposes.

The climate is cold and temperate. The average annual temperature in Kargil is 8.6 °C. About 318 mm of precipitation falls annually.The driest month is November with 6 mm. Most precipitation falls in March, with an average of 82 mm.The warmest month of the year is July with an average temperature of 23.3 °C. In January, the average temperature is -8.8 °C. It is the lowest average temperature of the whole year. The difference in precipitation between the driest month and the wettest month is 76 mm. The average temperatures vary during the year by 32.1 °C.

Languages

The Purik language is being spoken by about 78 percent population of Kargil while 10 percent speak Dard group of languages and about 3 per cent speak Balti language. Balti is a dialect of Tibetan and is spoken by the inhabitants of Askardu (Baltistan) and Turtuk in the Nubra valley of Leh district. The Buddhists of Zanskar speak Bhotia or Ladakhi language. The Kashmiri language is also spoken by about 50 per cent of the inhabitants of the village Malayan, which lies near the entrance to Kargil district, after crossing the Zojila pass. However, in Drass, we find most of the people there speaking three languages, firstly Purik and Shina, which are the regional languages and then Kashmiri.

Suru Valley

The Suru valley is a valley in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, which is drained by the Suru River, a powerful tributary of the Indus river. The valley's most significant town is Kargil The landscape of the Suru valley is wonderful, especially when it gets dotted by flowers in the summer. It expands from Kargil town upto the Penzi La watershed, from where the Suru river rises. Mulbekh Monastery

Mulbekh Monastery or Mulbekh Gompa is said to consist of two gompas, one Drukpa and one Gelugpa Buddhist monastery in the Zanskar region in the state of Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir in northern India. The double gompas are dramatically situated at the very top of a crag 200 metres (656 ft) above the road. They were connected with the nearby palace of Rajah kalon of Mulbekh below. They may be reached by a steep footpath winding up from behind. The altitude of the town at the foot of the crag is given as 3,304 m. (10,839 ft), which makes the altitude of the gompas 3,504 m. (11,495 ft). Its population is given as 5,730.

Kargil War Memorial

Kargil war memorial, built by the Indian army following the war with neighboring Pakistan in the late nineties is frequented by travelers plying the highway connecting Srinagar to Leh. The memorial houses some of the major sequence of events that happened during the course of the war along with details of the Indian army personnel, who sacrificed their lives in the process of recapturing some of the peaks occupied by the Pakistan army; like the Tiger Hill and Tololong.

The memorial has a memento shop, selling hats, T-shirts, coffee mugs etc. But the main attraction of the whole memorial is the Sandstone wall, in the open, which has the names of all the Indian army personnel, who laid their lives during the Kargil war. Visitors to the memorial can also see from there, some of the peaks that the Indian army captured back from Pakistan. The Kargil war memorial is by the side of the main highway going from Srinagar to Leh in Kashmir.

Nun Kun Mountain

The Nun Kun mountain massif comprises a pair of Himalayan peaks Nun (7,135 m), the highest mountain on the Indian side of Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, and Kun (7,035 m) are located in the Suru valley. Kun, the lower of the two peaks is separated by a snowy plateau of about 2 miles is north of Nun. Pinnacle Peak (6,930 m), the third highest summit on the Nun Kun massif, was first claimed to be climbed by Fannie Bullock Workman in 1906. Most conveniently accessed from the Kargil to Leh road, located about 60 miles east of Srinagar, the capital of Kashmir.

The twin peaks of Nun and Kun are located in the rugged and forbidding landscape of Zanskar in northern India and are the highest in the region. These two towering peaks and their satellites, Barmal, White Needle and Pinnacle Peak form a horse shoe above the Suru river on the boarder of Kashmir and Zanskar.

Kargil Pensi La Lake

Pensi-la (Pensi Pass) is a mountain pass in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, which is known as the Gateway to Zanskar. Pensi La is 4,400 m (14,436 ft) above sea level and connects the Suru Valley region to the Zanskar Valley region. The summit at this end of the Suru Valley, the only peak which can be seen, is 7,012 m (23,005 ft) high, while the mountain to the north is 6,873 m (22,549 ft). The pass is about 25 km from Rangdum Monastery.
